Good song. Love the Stones. Am sitting with it on my ipod now listening to it. Quite shocked really at how the words seem to mean that he has lost someone.. or something has happened to his girl.. thanks for that.. interesting. Will keep an eye out for your interpretation when you pick the point winner.. Depression it seems to me, maybe when he was going through his bad days.. it gave me something else to think of anyway.. thanks.. take care now

The first site below gives a plausible interpretation of the song and some interesting facts about it. The second link is a way-out animation set to the song which is fun to watch.

one of the stones better songs but as to the hidden meaning no idea try playing it backwards at 16 rpm that how hidden meanings are usually hidden in a song so people go out and commit murders and the like of course that was the first thing I used to try on me mums Ferguson music centre when I got me hands on the latest Sabbath album yeah right !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you're down 'n out, it's hard to watch beauty 'n happiness; that's where the paint comes in...to make it all disappear, in accordance with your feelings. Personally, I like more "hard women" and just love "sympathy for the devil".

I love that song as well. To me it has always represented the feeling of downness when everyone else is cheery. The idea of being isolated and alone in a crowd. "I see the girls go by dress in their summer clothes," et cetera.

I am so glad someone else loves that song. I thinks it's a anti - war song as it came out mid 60's.

its a load of rhyming couplets which fit together. I dont really think Sir Mick and Keef do anything other than pick the best fitting words for there songs. it really doesnt have a meaning.

"I have to turn my head untill my darkness goes" I believe it is about a darkness that has befallen the singer so that his world has turned to darkness, his attitude and outlook. Savage indightment of the times? or maybe even savage indightment of the drugs? but like all art, meaning and understanding is in the eye of the beholder. the song means what you decide it means.

I think it means they are depressed/sad and don't want colour (other emotion) in their life. Their world is black so they want everything to be painted black to reflect their inner emotions.
