Wrong catagory for this question. I think it'd belong more in the psychology area.
People blog because deep down almost everybody has a voice and they want it to be heard. Blogging is a chance for the avg Joe to get out frustrations. To present thier ideas, to speak out about or against something. It's a chance to cut up and have fun, a chance to describe themselves to other people.
More than that, with the media so out of touch with the people and Gov's corrupted beyond redemption blogs have become a means to comunicate essential concepts and news in a way that is not controlable by the media or the Gov. It is an exercise in free speach.
Other than blogs there are also forums and newslists. All have thier particuler postiives and negitives. With a blog you are in control of what is said. The readers can comment but you can also remove said coments if they bother you. You can also feed them to others as a one way sort of comunication.
I personally would like to see blogs combined with forums. Many blog entries would make excellent convo. The blogger themselves are not necesary to continue the convo but obviously it'd be good for the convo if they were involved in furthor discussion.
I personally am just getting into blogging. My very first blog was about why people blog. I pass on humor and write origional humor pieces, peices about politics and even throw in the occasional hype for my music projects. So for me blogging is another medium to reach folks. Hopefully contribute something usefull to the world even if it's just to make people smile sometime.

I can't answer why other people blog, but I will tell you why I do it.
Because I like to tell the people all over the world what I know of IT and businesses ( My blog is related to my experiences in all the jobs I've been in 16 years ).
And I feel good and proud everytime someone leaves a message to any of my posts.

Well me, I do it because it's like an online journal, and I'm not that good with keeping up with ordinary diaries, I'm a lot better at keeping up with my blog though!
