I know there's probably paperwork to fill out and money to pay, but is it really that difficult to become a US citizen legally? Why are so many people coming here illegally, why don't they just do what needs to be done and do it right?

Most of the immigrants come here for work and return home when they finish for the day. Those who do come in illegally lack the money and the literacy to read and understand what they're filling out for the paperwork that would allow them to enter this country legally. Conditions back home are probably so poor for them that they often come here with the hopes of a better life than the life they had back home.

It is very dificult to come here legally. You need to get the visa, there are many different version but they are only provided if you fulfill certain requirements.
Tourist visa are easy to get but they allow you only a few months, other visa like the H1 etc. allow you only a few years with very tight conditions (you are not allowed to change or lose your job for example).
For a greencard - which alows you an unlimited stay - for example you need company or family to "sponsor" you. Not necessarily financially but providing a very good reason to the INS why they should let you in and they do not accept many reasons.
So - Family meaning - your husband or wife is American for example, that's a reason to allow you in. Company meaning - you employer needs to prove and claim with the INS that no US citizen can do the work you can do.

The only other way is the greencard lottery where 50.000 or so greencards every year are given away by lottery. Because many millions of people participate chances are low to win.

And if you are running your own business and can show financial stability and investments you can get a greencard faster too.

They obviously want out of their current situation and I guess being in America illegally is better than being in some countries. The paperwork, time, and money it takes to get legal citizenship can be quite costly and also take a long time - many people don't want to wait and simply can't afford it, so they opt to sneak in instead.

Yeah theres alot of paperwork and it takes alot of time to become a citizen. I think it's more of how long it takes than how hard it is. And people don't want to wait. In my opinion they break the law when they come here so they should be tried as a criminal.

Its very hard to immigrate legally to the US. There are priorities and the wait could be as long as 10 years. The shortest wait is when you are married to an American. Other than that it will take you a very long time.

I don't know... but I wish they would stay there because my neighborhood is just becoming a very sad place to live. Whites are the minority now. It's about 50% illegal cubans, 30% illegal Haitians. I don't know why they stay here in West Palm Beach anyway... its so expensive, I dont know how they afford it. They already took Miami.
