A great shame, but no, it is an urban myth I am afraid.

The Captain Pugwash cartoon, which originally ran on the BBC between 1958 and 1967, is widely believed to have featured characters with risqué maritime names such as Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy. In fact, the crew of the famous Black Pig ship included sailors with no such names: present on board were Master Mate, Tom the Cabin Boy, and Pirates Barnabas and Willy.
so ur husband isnt winding u up

I remember Mr. Benn! I don't remember Bod, and I wasn't a fan of Captain Pugwash and Ivor the Engine. I do think the shows that I grew up watching are a lot more fun than some of the shows today's children are watching. Making movies would definitely introduce the shows to a new audience. I understand that to entice today's children that they need to be better animated, and I suppose if programmes were recreated, they'd have to do that. I also remember shows such as Rainbow, Postman Pat, Charlie Chalk, Bertha, Fireman Sam, and Playdays.

It is an urban legend which comes up regularly when people discuss trivia. All rubbish of course- even in those far off days, people weren't THAT naive. It was children's show after all.
What never ceases to amaze me is the people who "remember" these dodgy names! The human mind can play strange tricks!
