First of all, it amuses me how people have been telling the question setter to read it up themselves, when so far as I know, the point of this website is to resolve people's queries!
The American govt. is not easily compared to the british system in terms of equivalent positions, but here goes...
The US govt has 3 distinct branches, the lawmakers or Legislative branch (Congress ie. Senate and House of Representatives); those who enforce the laws or the Executive branch (President and Cabinet) and the abitrators or Judicial branch (Supreme Court + other federal courts). These branches may not interfere with each others business except in extreme circumstances. In the UK however, all three branches are rolled into one - Parliament. In Britain the only sovereign body is parliament, and the Legislative, Executive and Judiciary are all a part of Parliament. As a result there is no seperation of powers as in the US, and one party controls the whole government. Roughly however, the executive in Britain can be said to be the PM and Cabinet, Legislative to be the Houses of Commons and Lords, and Judiciary to be the lowest courts, leading to the HOuse of Lords - the highest court. In practise though, all desicions are made through the Executive. This is even true for the devolved areas of britain, as even though scotland, wales etc can make their own desicions, they can have their powers revoked by london at anytime, however in the US, the states have their powers enshrined in the Constitution. Most US States, work using mini versions of the Federal system, with Governors replacing Presidents, and each state is entitled to 2 senators in the federal congress, and a proportionate amount of congressmen in the house of representatives relating to their population. Hope ive covered most of it for you!

Kinda a big question, there.
I'll give a few SORT OF equivalents, where I can.
The United States of America is composed of 50 states -- with some other places belonging, but not quite sharing this system. (States you may have heard of include California, New York, Florida, Ohio.) The equivalent to the president (didn't ask about that, did you?) in each state is the governor, the head of the executive branch for that state.
Congress is comparable to Parliament; the Senate would be like the upper House (two senators are elected to the Senate from each state). Congress also includes the House of Representatives, which are elected from districts, or smaller areas within states (more populous states get more).
How does it work? Well, at the present time, it doesn't.
Next!

The system is hijacked by lobbies like the Israeli lobby If you have a good lobby you own the 3 governments.
"Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will do that . . . I want to tell you something very clear: Don't worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the Americans know it." -- Ariel Sharon to Shimon Peres, October 3rd, 2001, as reported on Kol Yisrael
