All the days of the week had a name so the last day they used Saturday.
I think it is said to fast, I think is is actually pronounced (Sat -yer- day), because you are supposed to set yer whole day and not do much but watch TV.

At least in the U.S., there is something in the air on Saturdays that seems to give entitlement to do nothing or anything. In general, Anonymous's answer pegged the tone of "American" Saturday:
Saturday is Saturday, because of the five day work-week ending on Friday.

Best guess: Saturday morning cartoons, sleeping in late, not having to get up for work, planning what to wear to church the next day, etc.

It doesn't mean much to me, except for the fact my store is busier. I think Saturday only has meaning to those with M-F, 9-5 jobs (which is basically everyone except us retail managers). Now, I like Sundays, because I only have to work one a month.
