Because darkness is the absence of light. You are blocking some fo the suns rays, that's why there's a dark spot on the ground shaped like you.

ghosts don't have shadows, so if on a sunny day, you don't see your shadow you will know you are dead

b/c the sun shines and we sometimes block the rays from getting to where they want to go, so there is a patch of darkness to remind us that we are stopping happy sunshine from filling a single spot upon the earth.
