Tomatoes would have to be shipped green and allowed to shelf rippen at the destination or they would be damaged in transit. Overnight shipping can be extremely expensive and still would require shipping unripe tomatoes.

Another consideration is the legality of shipping fresh fruits or vegetables across some state lines. It is illegal to ship fresh produce into California without it being inspected for pests etc.. Remember the mediterranean fruit fly outbreak a few years ago? Unwanted pests can quickly devestate a crop and cost millions of dollars to control.

I would rethink the whole idea. Surely there cannot be any economic benefit to shipping homegrown tomatoes long distance.

Good luck with your decision.

Most rescue organizations would not ship a dog because they want to meet you and see how the dog would fit in your home, etc. Some of the larger groups will fly the dog and a representative from the group to you at your expense to make sure the home is a good fit. If your talking about buying a dog instead of actually rescuing one breeders have a lot less issues shipping a dog as long as they get the money from you up front.
