Mr Gates wants you to spend all of the billion dollar gift and absolutely no money leftover. How would you spend this obscene amount of money? Prioritize which things you'll buy first.

wow and here all i ever hoped for was a million from the lottery.
i'd buy some land, wooded and outside the city some, anything over 10 acres would be great and then hire someone to put me up a nice house, two story with a porch all around it and a veranda all around the 2nd floor too, lots of windows and the best air conditioner there is. i'd have a pool put in cuz i love to swim and just lay in the sun even in the winter months, in texas, well here where i am anyways, it warms up nice in the winter months.
then i'd get a car and a truck, which kind gosh i couldn't even guess cuz i've never really really looked at new cars cuz of how much they cost. then i'd buy my sister and brother some land and a new house too even though my brother has always been a jerk to me.
i'd talk to the boys and girls club in town and see about setting up a scholarship fund cuz a lot of those kids won't ever have a chance for college and it's really sad.
i think another neat thing to do would be to put a water park in outside my town, we have a community pool but it's really kinda not fun, it's too crowded and well i don't want to get into why it's not so fun other than to say it's because of where it is and the kind of people that go there. a water park would cost people some money to get in so hopefully they'd behave better so they wouldn't be a proble and have to be kicked out. i'd set it up so one part of the park would be affordable to just about everyone and then for the big part of the park it'd be like the other big water parks i've been too.
i'd give my school some money to build a new library and science department cuz the library we have is smallish and the science department could always be better.
gosh i'm lost on how much a billion dollars is, i'm sure there'd be a lot left over to do more and there's so many needy projects like womens shelters and senior citizen centers, things that would or could make a big difference for a lot of people.

I would keep one million and give away the rest. My first gift would be pre natal care for all women in the USA free. We have now 6.5 infant deaths per 1000 live births. 42 countries do better and many of that 42 have national health care. 44 million Americans have no basic Health Insurance, half the number are women and children, that is wrong. The Iraq war will cost working class tax payers $2 trillion, yes trillion over ten years. Gates just gave $400 million to world Aids medication. Gates is a Liberal democrat.

I believe that he's in the process of giving away much more than 50% of his money. He has partially retired from Microsoft to run a non-profit organization that he and his wife started, and they have recently received a donation of about 30 billion dollars from the billionaire Buffett, to help. Where does the money go? Right now a lot of it goes to africa and some projects he thinks will work. No matter what you might think of him, surely we can agree that he is very brilliant- maybe a little crooked and a quick to release a disfunctional windows, but brilliant- and he's got all the money in the world to try out his opinions on how to fix it- and that's what he's doing right now.

I would not only give some money away, I would do some charity work or even start my own.
But firstly I will be honest and take care of my family's needs. I would ensure from the beginning that my money sets me up for life so I can use my time more proactively and help others.

I would buy myself a U.S. savings bond worth a billion dollar. After that, Mr. Gates will have no rights to my money and I will spend my money without any pressure. What do you think?

it would be extraordinarily difficult to spend one billion.

Let's say I wanted exquisite houses on lots of land in at least three places. $30,000,000 really ought to do it, leaving - 970,000,000 dolllars. Let's say I wanted my kids to be scholars and actors like they'd be if they could support themselves that way - so I give them $2,000,000 trust funds each. Now, I've got 964,000,000 left.

We spend one billion a week spreading death and destruction in Iraq.

I'd probably start my own fund, but I like the work of heifer.org and I like to idea of investing in micro-businesses. With that much money, I probably could spur replacement for the combustion engine and help save the planet. I guess I'd go that route.

I'd buy many things I guess, ranging from land, a house, a new car, I'd invest some money, I'd help family, and then I'd donate some to a favorite charity (probably animal related). Oh and to the person who mentioned a private Jet... go with NetJets. :)

I would invest the lot on the stockmarket in the name of my 2 children and a charity in equal parts

This will ensure my descendants remain prosperous and the charities keep receiving income.

Buy a home for my kids and then give the rest to charity, the kids will have to make their own after that.
