I would wear it so that it would be right side up to those who were looking at it (upside down to you).

If you mean like a claddagh ring, if you are "taken" you wear it with the heart pointing toward you. If you are available, you wear it with the heart pointed away.

How To Wear The Claddagh Ring

Claddagh rings were originally worn in the village of The Claddagh in Galway, Ireland and their traditional purpose was to show marital status.

If one was courting, the claddagh ring would be worn on the right hand with the heart facing outwards.

Once a betrothal had been decided the claddagh ring would be turned so the heart faced inwards.

Upon marriage, the claddagh ring worn on the left hand with the heart turned inwards, would serve as a wedding ring.
Over time the poupularity of the claddagh design grew and now, people around the world wear the claddagh ring and gift to friends and those they hold dear the age old message of Love, Friendship & Loyalty.

If you are unattached, you wear the point of the heart AWAY from your body or hand. If you have "given" your heart to someone, you turn it around and wear the point toward your body. This is SUPPOSED to give a man a "heads up" that you're taken. Unfortunately, not too many people know this custom anymore. Try it and see how many people ask you about it.

I was told by my Grandmother that you should wear it to where people can see the heart when you show them your hand.

well, if you're talking about an irish one (claddagh ring really), you wear the point of the heart inwards when you're in a relationship, and outwards if you're available.

with the point facing back towards your body...so when YOU look at it, it's facing the right way (and not upside-down).

Heart shaped rings should not be worn.

They are tacky.
