THe phones must be compatible with the same provider, or unlocked. I just bought a new TREO, took the SIM out of my RAZR, popped it in, and it works like normal.

Yes, provided they are both for the same provider or are unlocked. You would also normally want to contact customer service as they normally track which equipment is in use by way of the phones serial number (IMEI). This is absolutely necessary if you have phone insurance and want it to cover the correct phone but also required for the phone to coninue to receive proper updates. The phone stores information about what towers to look for and in what order to prioritize them. Wireless providers update that information periodically (not necessarily on a schedule). The phones receive any updates when being powered back on. However, if the incorrect equipment information is being stored you may not get an update because their system may think you already have (on the old phone).

I have verizon and I just go on line and in about 2 minutes I can change to any phone I have, and I have 5 phones that I switch around
