Yes, I am aware the Soviet Union collapsed years ago. I wasn't sure whether a "defection" of sorts was still possible these days with their labor laws.

He is coming to Pittsburgh to play for the Penguins. He has the same agent as Sidney Crosby. They have instructed him to use a legal loophole. He has given his Russian team written notice that he is leaving them.

The USSR ended years ago. No one has to defect any longer. Update your political database. He wants to play in the NHL period and he's gone AWOL probably to figure out how to do that.

he probably defected. he's so good, he obviously doesn't want to be stuck in the Russian league. he wants new challenges in the NHL
