No worries. When my family and I lived in Germany and my oldest two children started kindergarten at the U.S. military base grade school the kindergarten teacher came out to the apartment. They just want to meet the child on his/her "turf."

This allows the child to show the teacher some of their favorite things - maybe a stuffed animal a favorite blanket, etc. You don't have to take them into their bedroom or anything like that if you don't want to. They can meet the family, etc.

This is not like a social services visit. Nothing to be scared of. Consider yourself lucky actually. At our new school, our 3rd child just started kindergarten and they are not doing this program.

Kindergarten can be quite scary and overwhelming for a little boy/girl and this just helps alleviate some of that fear. That way when the child attends the first day of school they see a "familiar face" in their teacher. "Hey! I've know you! I've seen you! You've been to my house! This place isn't so bad after all. I'm gonna have fun here!"

Hope this helps and have fun this year. Your child sure should have fun! Good luck.

This is normal where I live. It is a requirement for teachers in my surrounding county. I worked at that school once and teachers had to do home visits. It is done to learn about the child, but mainly to show that their school system cares about the child and to open the door for communication. Also, it is probably done to try to get support from parents to help in the educational process-supporting their child's learning. It is much more than just meeting them on parent teacher night b/c that way they it will be more personal. Just be friendly--it is all new to them too and they are wanting to get to know you. There is nothing to be worried about. They will not judge you harshly or say anything mean to you. My friend was a teacher in Head Start and she had to do home visits in a very poor, rural area where the families really lived in poverty. She was nice and gave them information about her classroom, the school and information about resources to help families.

That's something different, I've never heard of a home visit. Maybe they want to see what type of environment the child lives in. I am sure they will be rather observant of that when they come to visit.
They may also want to make it more of a formal thing to help the child feel comfortable.

When I worked for Head Start we had to do home visits. They are not really looking for anything . They want the child to meet the teachers and feel comfortable in their own home. Its nice though to see hwere kids are coming from though, kinda helps ya out as a teacher. But dont worry they arent there to check u out.

They look at the home environment. Is it nurturing? Is it healthy? Is it safe? Most importantly, they look at your child's development to see if the child has matured appropriately mentally and physically. Early intervention for childhood problems is more successful than just letting them start school and see what happens.

They just want to understand your child as much as they can so they can give him a good education. They are looking to see what he is interested in, what sort of family he has, and get to know him informally in an environment where he is comfortable.
