ok so my laptop is a dell 6000, and just as a note, i didn't drop it or spill water on it.

i ran virus and spyware scans and removed 2 viruses (called trojan.vundo)

the keyboard does not work, but the touch pad does.

when you click on something with the cursor, it opens in another window when it normally wouldn't.

when you turn the laptop on with the power button, a diagnostic boot or "pre-boot system assessment build" runs on its own.

but when you turn it on using the media buttons (stop, pauses, play), the diagnostic boot doesn't run, and windows starts normally, but the keyboard still doesn't work.

thanks for any help in advance!

Get the computer booted and go to programs/accessories/system/restore. Run the system restore going back before you had this problem. It should repair it. Otherwise you'll need to do it the hard way and monitor the log files and use safe mode to check for ghost devices and a whole lot of other things. If this doesn't work, boot it in safe mode and go to control panel / system / hardware and choose device manager. From there check to see if there are duplicate copies of hard drives, floppy drives, keyboards, mice, human interface devices, monitors, network adapters, and USB devices. If there are any duplicates remove them starting with the bottom ones first. Reboot the computer and it should work fine. Hope this helps!

Keyboards are usually the first to go on a laptop. Use a regular pc keyboard with the laptop, that always works.

yeah, My impression of Gateway is not good. I'd never buy one (even used, at low price). I think your terminal is degraded. Try to badger them into replacing your lemon! Mention three strikes and you're out! If you paid by credit card and too many months have not passed, consider threatening to rescind the charge as leverage

Can you go in safe mode? Sounds like you still have a virus.
