Landlords who only own a two-family or a four-family apartment building usually do not have access to credit bureau reports. They may have you fill out a detailed application form that they have purchased at Office Depot, but they usually do not follow up with the verification of the information you provide. Most consider themselves good judges of character and will rent to you as long as you have a job.

Stay away from the large apartment complexes since the manage companies that run them do have access to the credit bureaus and will do background checks.

Good luck with your search for a place to live.

Credit checks are par for the course, unless you find a "Bubba" or someone who admits that they're too lazy to run a credit check.
