I have attended 2 funerals with in a year. mother and daughter. I am certain that they were laid to rest in different postions. 1 looking west and 1 looking east.
The one looking east the head stone is at her head. The 1 buried today will be looking west and the head stone will be at her feet. Im affaid the funeral director messed up.

Usually, the head stone is at the head, for obvious reasons. It's possible that the person being buried, or her family, requested that she be looking a particular way for sentimental reasons.

Hence the term "head" stone, the head is supposed to be at the end with the headstone. I am fairly certain that more than one person checked to make sure that they were in the right position (the funeral director and the cemeterian). It is difficult for a lay person to be able to tell which end is the head because you have to look closely to know what you are looking for. Most likely they are in the correct position, the funeral director and cemetery people have probably buried many, many people in that cemetery.
