A static IP is assigned by an ISP. and never changes.

Take notice of your IP address in ipconfig in a console.

Unplug the cable modem power wire and count to 20.

Then plug it back in. Look up your IP address. It will have changed. RoadRunner, TWC, and Bright House are all ISPs who save tons of money by letting their servers asign dynamic IPs.

What doesn't change, unless a tech. replaces it on a service call, is your 'DOCSIS modem' type, and it's MAC number.

The 'lease' is usually renewed for 43,200 seconds. Get an IPCOP firewall, for free, and let it keep your connection turned on and running fast! http://ipcop.org works well on a 100Mhz to a 800Mhz computer, with no monitor, or keyboard/mouse.

THAT keeps idiot cable thieves off the network. Whenever someone taps the pedestal it makes a 'leak' that the ISP can read in the central office. Techs dispatched to the pedestal can see the illegal tap. but, the thief can only steal TV signals, below channel 125, though all users, including Internet Broad Band users, get hit with a huge speed penalty.

That robs us of what we paid for, so, most of us report the loss immediately. All you have to do is 'ping' a server, and check the milliseconds before response. Don't worry, the ping test is a program that runs automatically... and gives results in automatic mode. I ping about once each day, or anytime the web seems 'slow'.

Road Runner only provides residential accounts with a dynamic IP

I am sure this page can answer your questions about RR.
