Also known as the Yamaha XS Eleven, it was among, if not the first, US-market Japanese motorcycle to have a motor larger than 1000cc's (it was about 1100 cc's, thus the "eleven.") It was a package of mean black and cool chrome that raised the ante on performance Japanese bikes of its time. It's an early-to-mid 80's bike, if I remember right.

yamaha did a whole range of midnight specials. 250 650 750triple, and teh 1100.
ive got a 1977 xs650, the original ones had wire wheels and looked dead sexy, then they moved to straight five or seven spoke alloys and the last ones had curly aloys... theyre like rocking horse poo to find... and even rarer to buy.
