You may or may not pack all this. If you are having a home birth or going to a birthing center or have use of a whirlpool, you can change your needs accordingly. You will have to use your judgement about how much you want to take with you to the hospital. These are just suggestions.

Mom Essentials
* 2 nursing bras
* robe (or just use 2nd gown turned around, you will be messy)
* slippers or slipper socks
* pjs (best to just wear hospital gown, you will be messy)
* outfit for leaving (maternity, as you will not fit in regular clothes yet)
* underwear (best to wear just the mesh panties hospital uses, if available)

Optional
* breast pads
* CD's & CD player
* magazines
* My Breast Friend nursing pillow or Boppy Pillow
* Pillows in colored pillow cases
* Watch with a second hand
* Water bottle with straw
* Bottle of non-alcoholic champagne
* Breast pump
* Coins for phones and vending machines
* Calling Cards
* baby book and/or birth announcements, thank you notes and pen
* birthing ball

Stongly Suggested
* cameras (video and digital/35mm)
* call lists (family and friends)
* Car Seat user manual - another mommy suggested this - she couldn't figure out how to adjust the straps once she got ready to leave...this was a life saver.
* snacks for self and DH
* notebook or pregnancy journal and pen (for keeping details tracked of your labor)
* preggie pops, Dum dum lollipops or hard candy to suck on
* insurance cards (copies)
* Massage stuff
* Frozen Water bottle (for rolling on back)
* Maxi pads with wings (buy the THICKEST ones - Overnights)

Toiletries:
* toothbrush/toothpaste or Brush-Ups instead
* shampoo, cond., body wash, loofah
* deodorant and body spray
* lip balm
* brush/ comb
* makeup and pre-moistened make up removers
* pony tail holders
* contact case, saline, glasses
* toilet paper - will like better than industrial tp at the hospital
* antibacterial spray - for tears or rips
* Breast balm - if you plan on breast feeding

For Baby
* going home outfit and socks (best to take a preemie and newborn)
* 2 blankets (receiving)
* 2 onesies
* Baby cap
* Mittens or socks for hands
* Car seat (can't go home without one)
* Diapers (if hospital does not provide diapers)
* Baby wipes

For Hubby
* change of clothes
* Ear plugs (with the nurses coming in at night, won't get much sleep)
* Overnight clothes
* Toiletries (if he stays overnight)

I had some baggy comfortable clothes and nursing bras, some stuff to distract you from the pain like something to focus on. If you can see about taking some soothing music. Make sure to pack some clothes to take the baby home in. A camera for lots of pics and maybe some pens and paper to send announcements!! Good luck

I over packed BIG TIME when I went to the hospital.
Basically all you need are your hygenic products a nightgown (if you dont want to wear the gowns they give you...I didnt think I would but it's so much easier to just use what they give you.) A going home outfit for you and baby, baby book, Pillows if you want your own, a camera and probably some snacks.

The hospital will provide everything for the baby.

Slippers, toothbrush, toothpaste, a change of clothes for when you go home. A comb, a brush, maybe an outfit for the baby. Slippers, a bathrobe. I would also maybe suggest some sanitary napkins.

from my past experiences.FOR ME: i brought p.j's enough for 3days. bras or i liked spandex tanktops or tubetops, undies, socks-booties, pair of slippers, toothbrush, toothpaste, brush, hairspray, hairties, trial size shampoo and conditioner, trial size lotion, and lots of magazines or vhs/dvd's incase you share your room or get bored with just the regular cable or no cable. or a portable cd player w/ cd's. extra pillows and a blanket. i only brought all these because the hospital stuff sucks and its too..... generic. also if you have to wait before giving birth - SNACKS!

FOR BABY: i brought them 3 set of clothes, receiving blankets, mittens, onesies, booties, caps, dishtowels(burpy clothes are too small),atleast 3-4 bottles incase i need to pump breast milk, and his essentials- lotion and shampoo. wipes and a package of newborn diapers. and most of all his carseat which you can bring later too.

i wore home baggy sweats and a big t-shirt with some print because you could leak breast milk just have some extra nursing pads on hand especially the ones that have sticky sides that will stick in place.

See if your hospital offers tours of the maternity departments and while you are there, see what they provide because I took loads of things that were given to me there, like toothbrushes/ toothpaste, maternity pads, breast pads, etc.Make sure you take nappies and something for your little new person to wear.
Oh one thing you definitely need to take... your maternity notes and birth plan.

Jammies....socks...slippers.. robe ...toiletries.....underwear....(they will give you maxie pads to wear)....nail clippers or file for baby...clothes to go home
Hospital provides diapers, shirts, whatever you need for baby.....but bring what you want. Some mommies bring outfits from home........I liked the wrap shirts when they are REALLY small. Congratulations!

Make sure the baggy pants you pack are not your fat pants from before you were pregnant. I packed my "loose pants" from pre- pregnancy, and I couldn't get them on! My husband had to run home and get maternity pants. It was embarrasing!
