You must have gotten my old lawnmower from Sears. It was 20 years old, did the same thing. I finally, got rid of it. Cutting the grass is a lot easier, when you don't wear yourself out starting the dam thing. You might try replacing spark plug, check air filter, battery. You also can try to spray ether in the spark plug hole...Good Luck, Next up for me the Snow Blower....It is in worse shape then both our lawnmowers.............

1st replace the battery . Riding lawn mower , I asume . The battery should be under the seat . Un bolt the cables and the restraint that holds it in place . Pull it out put new one in , in the reverse older . 2 If there is any old gasin the tank get it out . put fresh gas in . See if it will start . If so I'd go ahead and change oil and clean the air filter . If not you may nned to pull the bowl off the carb . to see iff it tarnished up from old ( bad ) gas . I'd spray all parts with some sort of carb cleaner like B-12 . If still nothing check for spark . pull spark plug hope it up to the coil wire place on a bolt on the head and crank the engine and is if it sparks . If not get a new plug and try agian . If still nothing take it to a shop . Replaceing the coil might get complex if you are haveing touble changeing the battery . Good Luck . Hope you get'r done

When you try to start it it doesn't make any noise? Then it must not be the battery otherwise it wouldn't even turn over. If it's turning over, then check for spark. If you don't have spark there's a good chance that mice chewed the sparkplug wire inside the engine and it's grounding out. You would have to remove the shroud to find this out.

Put in a new battery, spark plug, and fill it with gas. Then try. Engine should at least turn over if you do that. If still nothing
Then...get a new sears lawn mower,
keep it for 20 years, let the mice play with it and see if it starts.

The great thing about simple engines is simple diagnosis. It's got to be one of two things, fuel or fire. For fire, check the plug. If it's clean and the gappings correct, plug it back into the wire and hold it against the block (rubber gloves would be nice!) and pull the cord . If you see a spark, it probably a fuel line blockage or crappy gas. If you don't see a spark and the plugs O.K. check the wire or the solenoid. I've got engines twice that age that just keep running and running.

Empty gas tank.......it's probably very dirty and add fresh gas. Then replace spark plug. If these things don't work...........get a new mower. A 20 year old lawn mower is not worth the fight.

ask a shadetree mechanic, they should know, batteries for lawnmowers only last about 1 or 2 seasons anyway.
