If you like hiphop, you'll probably like Aubergine. I think E Street Alley went under a couple years ago, and there's now a place there called Belo with a 60s theme.
But, if you want to avoid ridiculously high cover charges and drink prices, not to mention the nightmare that is downtown parking, you're better off going somewhere off the beaten path. The AC Lounge on 30th St. in Normal Heights is one of the hottest, yet lesser-known bars in town. Ditto the Beauty Bar on El Cajon Blvd.

Just go down to the Gaslamp and see what floats your boat. It's not that hard.
Hotel Del is on Coronado - historical locale. Also look into what's going on in LaJolla like the Brewhouse - music there for sure.
The racing season should still be going on. The track in Del Mar is a beautiful setting and the town of Del Mar is upscale.

Bring lots of cash because San Diego and Coronado are way too expensive in my opinion. 5th street is something to see. Lots of people. But it'll cost ya.
But if I had to go, I would to to Moose's or Whiskey Girl on 5th street. They both play a good selection of music, and usually draw a large crowd.

It will still be very busy that week because of Labor Day. Stingaree is new, fun and posh. On Broadway is huge and lushly decorated. Both are pricey.
