Testament ... I think it came out in '83 but it is one of the most powerful & memorable movies I've ever seen. It is about a nuclear bomb hitting the US and the slow death of those on the outskirts by the radiation. It almost seems like a documentary because it has such a REAL feel to it. It affected me for a long time after I watched it and I still think about it from time to time even 20 years later.

"Big Fish" and "October Sky" are two Inspiring/feel good movies that aren't too well known.
If you like suspense-thrillers (not horror) then "Body Heat" with Kathleen Turner/William Hurt is an all-time classic. "Body Double" and "Blood Simple" are also very good; all three will keep you on the edge of your seat!
If you like movies that are soo soo bad that they are funny, try Battlefield Earth with John Travolta. (have a couple beers first and invite friends - you will laugh hysterically!)
Have Fun!
