U-Joints take up mis alignment of the driveshaft from transmission to the rear axle. Should replace both U-Joints on a single drive shaft. Does it klunk going from reverse to drive sure sign of drive shaft slack don't wait fix soon!
Two piece drive shaft with center bearing should be removed and sent to a drive-line repair shop to be properly reballanced after up to four U-Joints and center bearing are all replaced.
Single drive shaft can be reballanced to if you notice vibration fron the floor after the new U-Joints

A universal joint connects either the drive axle to the rear end or transmission, or in a 4WD possibly a drive axle to the front wheels.
These are "fairly" common parts to replace. $15 or so for the part. Be sure to get the greasable ones as they last longer if you keep them greased. This is something they "should" do when you get your oil changed, but sometimes you have to remind them.
Check my link for what they look like and what they do:

Were you hearing a clicking noise as you drive?
The universal joint are on your transmission and the wheels of ALL VEHICLES. When they begin to wear out or have worn out driving and steering becomes difficult.

u joints make the flexible connections between the trans and the wheels. if bad they will cause damage to the yokes and seals, if they break you will not be able to drive the car and could damage the transfer case and trans. get them fixed before it cost you a bundle!
good luck!

UJoints support the drive shaft - whether it's the rear driveshaft or the front drive shaft.
