Unfortunately, not all popup blockers are created equal. Some blockers perform better than others. In addition, websites are always inventing new ways to bypass popup blockers. If you are using Windows XP with SP2 then it automatic adds a popup blocker for Internet Explorer (IE). There is nothing stopping you from using multiple blockers at the same time. Most popular toolbars include a blocker, such as Google and Yahoo! toolbar. After installing the popup blocker(s), go to http://www.popuptest.com/ to test your popup blocker performance. In addition, the site also has a list of popup blockers, some free and others commercial. Thankfully, people like yourself have tried these popup blockers and rated them in order to help you in deciding which one to use.

Get spywareBlaster here. It's free, and prevents spyware from installing itself. Works on MSIE, Firefox and Netscape browsers. You can read about it at the site above.

The best part is it doesn't run in the background. Just configure it for your browser and it does the job, no hassle.

For added protection, get the free Ad Aware and run it once in a while. It doesn't find anything since I installed spywareblaster.

By the way, if you do install Ad Aware, be sure and run it and let it find the spyware that is on your machine. Spybot Search and Destroy is good, too.

If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser go to Tools, Pop-Up Blocker --> Pop-Up Blocker Settings. Under "Filter Level" set it to "High" to prevent ALL pop-ups.

This may be problematic in the future since some pop-ups are legitimately part of the website, and they will be blocked regardless.

Just as it says, use "ctrl" to override the pop-up block.
