I am thinking about doing laminate ( arborite) in a shower area of my bathroom. I cant afford to tile it so this is the next best option due to a very tight budget. I find that contact cement is very hard to work with as it is so unforgiving . You really have to get it right the first time.

I'm with you. I hate contact cement. It's a gooey mess. If you use the top grade of Liquid Nail, squirt an s-pattern out of your caulking gun, and smooth it out with a notched mastic trowel like the tile-setters use, it will work just fine.

The contact adhesive can be rolled thin the get out the bumps.
Construction adhesive is hard to roll and will form bumps and pockets.
If you are putting up a thick wall that dosent bend the adhesive is fine.

you can but it is not recommended the contact cement is thin and goes on smooth where as a construction adhesive is very thick and no way can you smooth it out enough to not be noticeable....

I wouldn't recommend your idea, if cash is an issue, think about "FRP', or "Dura-wall" with a latex based glue. Lowe's carries "FRP" and latex "FRP Adhesives".
