to motivate people to answer questions.

If this wasnt in place, you would have a lot of people just asking and not answering.

The value of knowledge you do not have is 2.5 times more precious than the value of the knowledge you do have, and 5 times more valuable than your opinion about someone else's knowledge. Someone in Yahoo! established these rates of exchange - who knows what their rationale was/is.

It's an artifically enforced market economy. I'd like to see some accounting for supply/demand - where some questions were more expensive than others, and the rewards for answering similarily increased or decreased, again based on supply/demand. If you wanted an answer in Nuclear Physics, and there were only 10 "experts" on the site, it'd cost you plenty, but if you wanted an answer in "Being Stupid on Yahoo," it'd cost you nothing, cos we're all experts at that.

Just an idea.

To give people the drive to answer more questions. Sure if you have a question it needs to be answered, but you answering is best. You get points and if it's the best a best answer which is always exciting!

Perhaps it stops people with silly, or simple questions, that can be easily looked up, or mental midgets from irritating or boring the hell out of the rest of us with the same questions over and over.

It's all part of Yahoo wanting you to answer questions to get your points back.
