I find it frustrating, when I came out of the closet no one even thought I was gay because they all belived in the Hollywood version of gay guys, like guys from Queer Eye for the Straight guy.

It's so god damn annoying.

Stereotypes are the fodder of the entertainment industry. Dumb blondes, mother-in-law jokes, all sportsmen are goodlooking and stupid, all rednecks are ignorant (well, that one may be accurate..:-)

The purse swinging, outrageously dressed, simpering gay guy with the high-pitched voice is just as inaccurate.

The fact is, most gay men are indistinguishable from most straight men. We don't dress or act differently. Gay men watch football, drink beer, get rowdy, and wake up wondering what the name of the person is next to them - except the gay guys wake up next to another guy.

How's that for a stereotype?

Stereotypes are ALWAYS based on extreme minority group behaviour within any group, others are completely false altogether, so it is annoying when people apply stereotypes to the majority of a group and insist that's how they all are or most of them are. It's ignorant and false.

There can't be any stereotypes that are less true for a majority of a group than "gay" male stereotypes! The ones that do fit the stereotypes are pretty disgusting however but it should always be rememberd they are the acception and not the rule. And the media only pushes the stereotypes on to people because that is what is more dramatic. Realistic portrayals of "gays" would be boring and they are only interested in ratings and not reality.

I don't find it so much disgusting as simply ignorant. Watching shows with such portrayals only encourages the stereotypes to be perpetuated. There ARE some men who act like those portrayed but most do not. Some heterosexuals think that the portrayal is accurate, but then many don't think that at all. I suppose that those who think all gay men act that way either haven't really ever met a gay person or they WANT to believe that's what "we" all act like because they are uncomfortable with the fact that they can't spot a gay man in a crowd and avoid him.... it's all so silly.

Go out. Be yourself. Don't worry about them and do like I do and refuse to watch those shows. Eventually someone will get the message.

Any type of stereotyping can be bad. It is true that the "hollywood" portrayal of gay men sometimes make gay men who don't live up to the stereotype feel like they aren't going to be accepted as gay, so they try hard to live up to the stereotype.

Stereotypes exist because that is how society sees that group of people in general. To get past the stereotype, you need to discover who YOU really are, and be that. Anyone who really wants to get to know you will accept that you are gay, without you having to live up to any stereotypes.

It can be hard, the stereotype exists within the gay community itself because it's pushed on gay men, even by the queer media itself. It might sound corny, but you have to really put an effort into being who you really are. You'll seem more genuine in the long run :)

(This isn't to say that everyone who lives up tto the stereotype is fake. I'm all for people being who they are, and if they are a bit camp, then the best to them :)

I feel the same way you do... I dont like the stereotypical portrayals of homosexuals... Hollywood Loves drama... the more dramatic... dramatic straight people dramatic homosexual people.... so its natural that when people finally decided to show homosexuals on TV in different way then had ever been done before ( positive ) that they pick guys that are overly dramatic and funny... knowing before hand that there are alot of folks that hate homosexuals... and their goal being ratings... they have to find a way to break the ice right?

But I understand how you could feel like the sterotype made and continues to make things difficult for you... feeling like you have to "prove" you are what you say you are... and it doesnt help that family usually even if they just walked in on you and your boyfriend 10 minutes before, would much rather believe you are not gay... So the it makes it double hard... it helps the overall picture in some ways but causes individual complications sometimes too

Phrased carefully, I am disgusted with the portrayal of ONLY stereotypical gay men (and lesbians for that matter). I'm not going to deny the fact that there are people like those shown on Queer Eye; I'm extremely tired of seeing ONLY those people shown however. If there was more media representation, there'd be more opportunities to show the true diversity of the GLBT community.

As for what happened to you: it's obvious that these people need educating. Maybe you can be the one to do that.

A stereotype is just that - a presumtion of how someone is before getting to know them. Not all black guys have a huge package, not all Muslims want to kill Americans, and not all gay guys act like girly girls. Those are just a few. People are too focused on what they see on TV and what they see out in public. The only people they know are gay are the ones that flaunt it. Well most gay people don't flaunt it in public so that is one side of us the general public doesn't see. It's a shame, I for one pass no judgement on anyone without getting to know them first.

Hi Adam, I just read the answers and like you I am stunned but no surprised by them. Are some Gay men feminine, of course, so are some str8 men. Do I find the portrayal annoying, most definitely, but you must remember, str8 society can't deal with us. We are something beyond their understanding. Remember, Gays have continued to live and thrive even when the world itself has constantly tried to kill us off. From early Christians to Hitler to Conservative Christians of today, we have always been attacked, beaten down and even murdered, yet unlike most str8s (who frankly probably would not survive the crap we put up with)we continue, we grow, and like the Jews, we too now say "Never Again". This is threatening to them, so it is easier to make fun of us, laugh at us, but we will endure. Again, do I find it disgusting? oh yeah, but I keep in mind that only someone who truly fears me will deride and try to harm me. I am stronger and my friend is the best response we can give.

You have to meet people where they are.

We could do worse than be compared to queer as folk people.

Another thing I don't like is how the media shows a gay pride. The vast majority of people their will be dressed normaly. But who makes the news? A fat ugly drag queen or weird guy with piercings all over dressed in leather with azz-less chaps.

Just develp a thicker skin. Calmly be prepared to explain how you are again again and again. You can do it. And you will make the world a better place.

Good luck.

God most people answers are horrible. I feel bad for you Adam G.
This is my opinion.
I don't hate feminine gay guys, BUT I REALLY HATE THE STEREOTYPE!
Everyone thinks that if you you are gay it is soooo plainly obvious because you act like a prissy little girl. That is false! More gays guys are "straight" acting than feminine.

I completely agree with you. I hate the stereotype the media always shows and I hate the fact that everyone can't accept that gay people are as normal as everyone else.

Well I guess it is up to people like us to set the record straight.
Keep on keeping on.
