craftsman mower, stalled when mowing high grass, tried to start it, smoke came from the mower, tried to push the button that gives gas to carb, gas shot out from the hole in the button...any ideas on what happened and/or what to do?

I would take it to a lawn mower repair shop

Was the smoke black or white? Black smoke would indicate that there is a problem with the fuel system (running too rich). WHite smoke is usually from oil burning in the combustion chamber; when the mower stalled it could have sucked some oil past the piston rings into the combustion chamber. Gas coming out through the primer button would indicate that the primer seals are shot and the gas is leaking out.

A lawn mower shop may be able to help you get the necessary repairs done.

Hmmm. Knowing the color of the smoke would be helpful. Check first to make sure the engine turns over and rotates freely. Try starting it several times. Play with the choke and don't give up. If you stalled it on the high grass it may be hard to start again.

If after several attempts at starting you are still not getting anywhere, then you probably need to take the carb out, clean it, change the oil, and do a general clean and inspect on the mower.

It sounds flooded. The gas will shoot out of the button when it floods. Also,it sounds as though it needs to set for a little while and cool before you restart it.If you have reared the mower up or down, the oil needs to settle back down, otherwise it will smoke.Restart it on a flat smooth(no grass) surface after it sets for about 20 minutes.
