I went to church, still read my bible, and my family is somewhat religious. I have tried to be straight, been to church, prayed to God. I'm still a lesbian. So why do some people assume that going to church will somehow "change my lifestyle"?

Because they are ignorant and have no idea what it's actually like to be gay.

I used to be the same, I tried going to church to make myself straight, but the only thing that could come from it is you become so ashamed of who you are, that you deny it, and just end up upset for the rest of your life. Not exactly a healthy way to be.

Sure, for some people maybe they are happier living a lie than admitting they are gay, but that would only happen if someone is brought up to believe that that part of themselves is to be disgusted and abhorred.

Read the spring issue of Scientific American Mind. It's a genetic thing. You either are or aren't. They even went so far to say that if there was not social stigmas, the bulk of the population would unhesitatingly be bisexual, with the minorities being heterosexuals & homosexuals.

As a Lesbian, you have probably had times you have had to wear a 'beard' for your own safety.

Get in touch with LGBT organizations locally, so that you can talk to others in your situation. You'll probably make some friends and have a second family to get away from the negative things you are being told.

There is nothing wrong with you. If you don't live at home, limit your visits, and if you don't believe in the church — stop pretending by not going. Be true to yourself.

They are ignorant. And by the way, a good number of the people who regularly attend church services ARE gay/lesbian or bisexual. Don't stop going to church just because a few characters in your family or social circle don't agree with your lifestyle. Go for your own reasons, not theirs. Back to your question: Many people who have lived a very closed, protected life actually believe that nearly everyone around them -- in church, in school, at the grocery store, at work, etc. -- are straight or want to be straight or want to be married or want to have children. They can't accept the fact that others around them are, in fact, different in some way from themselves. And when they finally realize that not everyone is like them, they attempt to find a way to make these nonconforming people similar to themselves.

Because they are AFRAID of people different than them, and will do everything possible to make the world adjust in a way that confirms their beliefs. It is sad really. You can't change what you are attracted to. I've seen many good looking women and men. But just because they are nice looking, doesn't mean I'm attracted to them. I don't know what makes me attracted to one person over another, I just know that either I am, or am not attracted to a person. I'll never be able to be attracted to women, or effeminate men. So go on being a lesbian - good luck, and I hope you find happiness.

Babes... you are who you are. People think that homosexuality is a demon and if you go to church it'll be taken away from you. People think that you can pray and ask for it to be taken away from you and it will. If your sexuality is a choice then change it to fit what it is that you want in life. If you're like me and was born a homo, then accept it and love it; other people will just have to learn to do the same. You're the only one that can change your lifestyle... If you ginuinely and and sincerely love yourself... then be yourself and be done with it.

Ignorance and hatred of those who are different from them. These people have obviously been sleeping in church and have not read as much of the Bible as they claim they have!

Yeah, that's silly. I go to a church that affirms my sexuality and welcomes me to worship God with them. They don't try to change me, they try to get me to usher, take my turn and making coffee, and join the men's fellowship group. Well, maybe that is change!
