Please don't pet his elongated thorax!
They really don't LIKE it!
If you come at him from behind he'll get panicky and defensive, if you come at him from in front he'll be annoyed and defensive ...! Either way, you'll only be a bit scratched - not hurt - but HE might get injured when you pull away from him in surprise ... or he might even get squashed - hopefully accidentally.
You have to feed them (harmless) live bugs too ... otherwise they starve to death.
BTW, WHY would you want to 'pet' a mantid's thorax? I assume that you DO know what a thorax is...??

I don't think you can purchase an adult one, but you can buy the egg cases from organic seed catalogs, as a natural pest control. They are usually inexpensive, and you'll get 4-5 hundred babies when they hatch!! =)
