I have been wanting to learn about cars for years and I want to go to school for it, but I don't want to start school with knowing pretty much nothing. I know that I know a little bit more than the average girl(woman). But I'd like to get a headstart before I begin school

Well good for you. There are lots of auto technicians and about 2% female. Remember you have to work in the heat in summer and cold in winter drafty shops get really dirty. I have been doing auto repair for 30 years. Start out at a car dealership as a lube and oil change person. That gets your foot in the door. Then start reading service bullitens Go to the computer look up recalls and start trying to understanding brand technology. Learning the names of parts and keep watching and helping service managers like some who does not sit down and is looking for something to do.

I am a woman and I learned alot from taking a course for women only through a local adult school. Having more knowledge and hands on experience gave me power and confidence in maintaining my own car.

i respect the schools that teach auto mechanics and wanted to go also but i didn't and now i wished i had. i think it might be better if you went into school a little "green" than to know alot.take what you know and go for it. in the words of a Tim McGraw song that i really like and it helps me alot, Live Like You Were Dying. good luck

best thing to do is go knowing nothing. that way it will be easier for your teacher to make a mechanic out of you. asking in here isnt good. you will learn more. if you listen to the people in here when you go to school you will be telling your teacher i learned this on internet. go unknowingly is the best.you will learn a lot more.
