They believe they are heroes... dying gloriously for a cause. Some of them are doing it just for the money - they come from a poor family and once they do it - thier family gets paid what to them is a lot of money.
Some grow up away from international media - all they know about the world is what they have been told. Most are young - 16 - 19. It is sad really.
