There are 2 major vessels running down your back along the spine - the aorta and inferior vena cava. The aorta is a thick wall artery and not easily compressed but the IVC is a thin wall vein that is easily occluded by pressure.
If a woman with an advanced gestation lies on her back for long periods, the weight of the uterus will occlude the IVC and reduce the amount of blood flowing back to the heart. This will in turn lead to reduced blood being pumped out of the heart to the rest of the body.
As a result, the blood supply to the placenta may be reduced and the baby will end up getting less nutrition and oxygen from the mother. This may lead to growth restriction of the baby.

Bestanswereerererer, you are pretty funny.
Laying on your back is NOT bad for the baby. It's just not BEST. You can do it all you want, but the Inferior Vena Cava runs to the right/center of your body and unless you lay on your LEFT side, it has the potential to limit bloodflow, but it will NEVER cause you any harm, just will keep you more comfortable as your lungs and heart compete with room in your chest cavity as the baby grows.
There's enough to worry about, so I asked my Doc and my Doctor hubby this 20 times already and its fine. If you're still worried, get some thick pillows and prop yourself up while laying on your back.
Congratulations, Mamma!

Lying on your back puts pressure on the fetus and on your organs. Try to lay on your left side because lying on your right side also puts pressure on your VenaCava (the main artery of your heart)

Because the wieght of the baby is laying on a particularly important vein (vena cava?) that provides the most oxygen to your baby.

Crushes your intestines, spine, but most importantly your aorta and vena cava. These are the two largest blood vessels in your body. When you constrict them you put yourself at risk of clotting and affect your blood pressure. You also constrict the blood that goes to your baby. In effect, it suffocates the baby.

Because the baby can lay on major blood vessels. Which can be harmful to baby and you.
Doctors suggest you try to avoid sleeping on your back to increase blood flow to the fetus.

It affects your circulation in such a way that it can be bad for the baby - don't know the specifics but it's a good question for the doctor.

It teaches them to be lazy. Then they grow up expecting a free handout, and they end up pregnant and on welfare before they turn 20.
That's why your mom should have not layed down after 4 months of pregnancy.
