All babies are different. Their teeth can come as early as 4 months or as late as a year old!

The later it takes the stronger their teeth will be.

I never breastfed my children, but I would imagine once they start getting teeth and clamp down your boob...it would hurt.

My 9 mo. old has 8 teeth already. I am still breastfeeding. When he was about 5 mo. and started getting his first teeth, yes, he bit a couple of times. But only a couple of times. Yes, it hurt! However, it's not the end of the world. He learned really quick not to do it because I yelled "ouch!". I think I may have really startled him. But I couldn't help it! As the months have gone on, he has very rarely bit right when latching on. But not so hard that it really hurts. Other than that, I've had no problem. It is totally doable. Many women continue to breastfeed with babies with teeth.

It doesn't always hurt when babies teeth come in. Not all babies will bite. But typically babies do want to gum on stuff when their teeth come in. And it can hurt. The older you child is, the easier it is to stop this. There is a whole lot of information on the internet from Mommies who have been thru this. I have been thru it with 2 babies and I still breastfeed. Don't give up because every day your baby get's your liquid gold is a good day. When your child starts to bite, just give them a loud ouch. That way they know it hurt. Do this a few times. If they don't get the point, then put them down to play by themselves. If they cry for the breast, then give them a minute before you pick them up. Hold your breast and tell them it hurt and make sure you show your emotion on your face. Babies can read emotions better than they can understand your words. They read emotions on faces and in your tone of voice. Then after a minute, pick him/her back up to feed again. If it happens again, do the same. Keep it continous. If your child is older and he keeps biting, then you can let him cry for a longer period of time each time he bites. But I wouldn't exceed more than 10 minutes. And I would pick him up before that time too. Just put your breast away and hold him while telling him that he won't be able to breastfeed if he bites. Don't offer any other foods during this time. It will distract him from the point. But you can offer him a teething toy and tell him that is good for his gums. Or even put some anbesol on his gums. Something to help get rid of the urge to bite.
Good luck.

Around 4-8 months seems to be the average age for the first teeth to errupt.

NO.....breastfeeding should NOT hurt when baby gets teeth. The lower teeth are covered by the tongue when baby nurses. Baby CANNOT bite and nurse at the same time.

I totally agree with "Resa S". It is easy to "train" your baby to stop this painful behavior when it starts, as the baby can easily nurse on your breast & bite in between gulps! This can hurt! I breast fed for over 2 years (6 months exclusively, then I started to introduce fresh fruits & vegetables, ONE AT A TIME, on a weekly schedule, until no more spit -ups). All babies are different & you have to find what works best for you & your child. Whenever I got bit & cried out in pain, my baby would laugh! I used the finger method & the baby got the message better than my crying out! I used a lot of hot rags & compresses when my nipples were hurting! It isn't easy, but hang in there, because it is definately worth the pain. My baby didn't cut a first tooth until 13 months, which is later than most babies. That "baby" is now a happy healthy adult Firefighter!

Depends on the baby. Mine started at 5 months, and it did not hurt to breastfeed until he had at least 8 teeth in. he tried to bite me a few times, but once he realized that nursing stops as soon as he does, he stopped trying. He's over a year now and it only hurts sometimes when he falls asleep on the breast, 'coz then he's not controlling his latch.

Babies can start teething as soon as 3-4 mos. old. My daughter just got 4 teeth in the past month and she just turned 8 mos old. It only hurts when they bite, which they will at some point.

My oldest got teeth at 4 months. They startnibbling, trying to figure out what to do with them. It's fairly easy to stop them. The easiest way I found was to gently push their nose into my breast. They have the instinct to open their mouths to breathe. They associate not being able to breathe with biting while nursing.

The link below has some helpful suggestions on how to stop biting while nursing.
