Yes. What is the main idea he wants you to learn from reading his/her book. For example in BLACK LIKE ME by John Griffin, he wants the reader to see what it was like to be Black and living in the South in the early 1960's. In Alex Haley's book, ROOTS, he wants you to get a picture of what it was like to be Black and living in America from the time of slavery. In HAMLET, Shakespeare wanted to illustrate the dangers of procrastination.

I hope this helps.

The question is somewhat incomplete. Was there a previous question about the text that this relates too?

You cannot blanketly state the authors purpose for writing a book unless you are quoting them from an interview (and even then, I've seen examples of literary types refuting those answers), but you may be able to state why they included a particular image or passage or why a certain character acts the way they do.

It may be easier to answer the question if you rephrase it so it's not so open ended, an example
instead of asking:
What is the author, JM Barrie's, purpose in including the crocodile in the book Peter Pan?
You can rephrase it to:
Why is the crocodile an important element in Peter Pan, what might it signify?

You cannot read minds so you cannot answer the first version. You are allowed you opinions though so you should have no problem with the second.

And remember: Be sure to back up your assertions with proof from the text

I would say it would mean what did the author intend to show in his or her writing. What was the purpose for the piece they wrote? An example might be to persuade someone to do or not do something; to express a feeling; or convert to a way of life, etc.

The author's purpose is Why was the piece written? What was the author trying to get you to do? Was it to persuade you/convince you , entertain you or inform you.

the author's purpose = WHY he/she wrote the text
Like to state something.. or for the hell of it.. or because it's a true event that should be remembered..etc

What are they trying to get across to the reader? I think that is what it is asking. Good luck!
