what's the difference between R-rated version versus Unrated version when it comes to dvd's?

"Unrated" means that the cut of the film was not submitted to the Motion Picture Association of America to get a rating. Usually this means a cut that has more violence and/or sex in it that might've gotten the movie a worse rating than its original version had it been given a rating.

The issue is that movies tend to make more money the tamer the rating is; NC-17 movies get very little promotion, and some theaters may not be willing to show them; A movie getting an R means that most the below-17 crowd won't be able to spend money getting tickets to the film. So the trend with some films (particularly horror films) has been to release a tamer version to theaters so more people will see it, then release an unrated cut on DVD for fans to get the full horror/violence/sex treatment (as well as provide added incentive for them to buy the DVD, as it will have material they haven't seen before).

For example, I purchased American Wedding (it's like american pie three) and it skipped the scene with the strippers when I chose the R-rated version. When I chose the Unrated version it showed the strippers scene. (I had that say question)

More swearing and or sex scenes. Something directors or producers think the ratings system would not have approved. It could also just be a scam to make you think you are buying forbidden fruit.

Well, it seems there are a few more curse words, more blood, more sexual stuff so they take a little out and call it R-rated. But other than that, I haven't realized anything different
