Did it make you cry?
Adams song made me cry I admit. It's like one of my favorite songs. Gosh, so emo.

The proverbial "sad-love" song has probably been instituted as much as religion, even the hippies, though they were somewhat effective activists, focused on what can be seen as the real 'emo'. Though a little more of their political and social thoughts could have been lyricized more than they did back then. If a song's vibe (music wise) is solemn and not too morose, it will not just make me feel down, but make me think w/out the help of the lyrics, though meaningful thought provoking words only makes the song much sweeter. In this aspect, 2 songs in particular, 1 I heard a long time ago that I still think to, and was used as the M*A*S*H theme, is "Suicide Is Painless" by Mike Altman and Johnny Mandel. The other is a song late, great, rap artist Tupac Amaru Shakur listened to in his last minutes w/ us as well as one that I've felt since a child, is Don McLean's "Vincent". Both of these get me in a serious, somber mood and allow me to take more of life's subtleties into consideration, which is always good.

Le Moribond or Ne Me Quitte Pas by Jacques Brell, about dying and about saying goodbye to someone you love. Some of Jacques Brel's songs are disturbingly cheerful sounding, yet really quite sad.

If you see him singing Ne Me Quitte Pas live, on a video from the 70's, he's actually crying.

Ne Me Quitte Pas certainly beats most of the cheesy ridiculous songs mentioned above, haha.

Here are the lyrics in their closest translation into English for Ne Me Quitte Pas (Don't Leave Me Now)

{There was thunder, There was lightning, Then the stars went out
And the moon fell from the sky, It rained mackerel, It rained trout
And the great day of wrath has come, And here's mud in your big red eye
The poker's in the fire, And the locusts take the sky
And the earth died screaming while I lay dreaming.}.

MAD WORLD

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world ... world
Enlarge your world
Mad world

I agree... Jaques Brel by far. I especially like the part that goes... Moi je t'offrirai
Des perles de pluie
Venues de pays
Où il ne pleut pas.
But the lyrics are simply brilliant.
