go to start>run type msconfig click ok ...on the box click startup tab....here uncheck everything you don't want running all time the computer is on

Startup speed is primarily due to the amount of programs that run from startup. Most are not needed and run in the background using system resources like RAM. Go here and it will walk you through turning off unneeded programs. You will still be able to use them by starting them from the Desktop or Start Menu and All Programs.

I recommend you do all the steps prior to getting to Remove AutoStart Programs.

Hello,

Here are two things you can do to speed up performance:

These Settings will fine-tune your system memory (atleast 256MB of RAM recommended).
- Go to Start -> Run -> type regedit and hit OK
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
1) DisablePagingExecutive - double-click it and in the decimal area put a 1 - This allows XP to keep data in memory now instead of paging sections of ram to harddrive which yields faster performance.
2) LargeSystemCache - double-click it and change the decimal to 1 - This allows XP Kernal to run in memory which improves system performance
3) Create a new DWORD value and name it IOPageLockLimit - double-click it and set the value in hex - 4000 if you have 128MB of RAM, 10000 if you have 256MB, or 40000 if you have more than 512MB of RAM - This tweak will speed up your disk cache.
- Reboot and watch your system fly.

Here is another way to give you an extra boost in WinXP's boot performance. This is done by disabling your unused devices in Device Manager.

For example, if you don't have input devices that are connected to one of your USB or COM ports, disabling them will cut down your boot-up time.

This has been tested. I've disabled every device that currently has no use for my pc and it worked great. My boot time is faster than before.

- Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager.
- Disable devices that you don't use on your PC and then restart. Good luck!

Make sure you having everything deleted from the start-up menu. Your start up is in All Programs. Remove items from your task bar that you don't need. Be sure to clean out your temp. files and history files. Be sure to keep the maintence up on your computer. Defrag your computer.
