I have a nephew who is always doing drugs. He has been in and out of jail for years and cannot stay clean. He has stolen from everyone in the family, but always comes begging for help when he becomes homeless and has nothing to eat. My father inlaw always helps him. He says that he is family and he would feel bad if he didn't help him. After all he does love him. It is his grandson. What would you do?

Well he seems like he hit rock bottom but hasn't realized it yet. I think everyone in the family should have an intervention and talk to him. Tell him he needs to go to NA and seek treatment. Tell him how tired everyone is of worrying about his drug use and how he is going to live without food and shelter. Your Dad sounds kind hearted he should maybe only give him food and a blanket to stay warm. Let him stay out there for awhile he will have to be the one that will seek help for himself but still try to talk to him.

He is still a member of the family and he is crying out for help. It's time for some family intervention . Don't just turn your back on him. Something may have happened to him and he is using drugs as an escape. Also try some family prayer. The family that prays together stays together. It can't hurt.

You can't stop someone from helping/enabling the kid to do his drugs. It isn't doing the kid any favor to keep helping him. You might point out to your father inlaw that he's really helping to kill the kid. By helping him do drugs, he is shortening the kids life very drastically. Here's a web site you might find interesting: http://rational.org/index.html
You might copy some of the stuff off there and show your father inlaw.
Has he ever heard of tough love?

I understand where your father-in-law is coming from, but certainly he must realize he is enabling your nephew's behavior.

You might want to read a book called "Tough Love." It deals with situations like these and can help your family find better strategies to deal with this problem on a long-term basis.

Good luck.

i would do the same as the grandpa except don't give money, and all gifts remove the tags, otherwise they can return the items for money and buy more drugs. always let them know you love them and will be there for him or her druggies are sick people and like all sick people they need care

pray for him. Recovery is not for people who NEED IT (because alot of people need it), it's for people who WANT IT!!!! He has to GET TIRED of his current life. No one can help him but himself and his Higher Power! He needs to go to meetings and be around people who UNDERSTAND his predicament and are WILLING to help and guide him. Good luck

Talk him into checking himself into rehab. Helping him every time he gets himself into trouble is called 'enabling'.
