Simply put, if you play rock get a Stratocaster. If you play country get a Telecaster. These are the number one guitars for these genres, although the Strat gets a lot of competition from the Gibson Les Paul.
Heres a partial list of some well known Strat users past and present:

It's a matter of personal preference and the type of music you will be playing. I own both. My 73 Telecaster has a bright "texas-twang" sound. My SRV Stratocaster has a fuller, more balanced sound.

The tele has 2 single coil pickups. The strat has 3 single coil pickups, although there are variations. Most teles have a set bridge, while most strats have a spring-loaded tremelo (or "whammy-bar").

For rock, the best choice is the Stratocaster. If you like country, the Telecaster is better. For blues, I use both.

no one can tell you that. play them both and listen to the tone because they will both be very different. tele's are used alot in country music since they have a more twangy sound. strats tend to be more versitile. you hear them alot in rock, blues and sometimes even some more hard rock stuff. i think you can get a larger variety of tones and sounds from the strat but try them both and see which one suits your musical style.
