Here are a few key points:

1) The American Winters- British Soldiers were not as prepared for the climate in the colonies.
2) British Troops- The British Troop sent to quell the Colonists were the second rate troops England had to offer. The best English Troops were tied up with European affairs.
3) Combat Tactics- The Colonists escaped the ideas of Line Warfare and practiced the art of ambush, guerilla tactics and snipers. The English thought to be "uncooth."
4) Logistics- The British had to be resupply from across the Atlantic. A trip not as easy then as it is today. Materials and ammunition would be in short supply.

...without the French Navy and Army, and technical assistance the American revolution would have taken quite a bit longer to win. The long supply lines were taken its toll on the British, Also the fact that the colonists were applying the affects of guerilla warfare: ( using cover and camoflage, hit and run tactics!!!!! )
