DO NOT use this method for jewelry that has any precious stones. Also DO NOT use this method on “Antiqued” silver as it will remove the desired antiqued finish on the silver. It’s gotta be pretty much “all-silver” jewelry.
The full instructions on doing this are on this website http://www.bloglander.com/jewelrymaking/2005/12/12/cleaning-silver-jewelry-with-water-softener/
It says you can also use a pie tin instead of foil

I don't know what Calgon is, but if you crumple up little pieces of Al foil into a hot, saturated soultion of H2O (water) and NaCl (table salt) you simply need to dip your tarnished silver in and it will come out almost completely polished, if you just wipe it gently to dry it off it will get it very shiny.
I have seen this done in my Chemistry Class. It works because Al is more reactive than silver and the saturated solution of salt and water acts as a "carrier" for the Sulfur that causes tarnish. what it does from a chemical stand is to seperate the sulfur from the silver and deposit the silver back onto the item while the sulfur binds to the Al. the stronger the salt solution the better it works, and the more Al surface area you have the better it will work, that is why you want to use as much salt as the water can dissolve and you want to crumply, loosely lots of Al foil.
When I do this with pieces of silver I use a glass jar because it is not affected by the chemical reation so once all of the foil has been "used up" that is coated with Sulfur all I have to do is swap out the foil for some new pieces.

Add to pot of boiling water a piece of aluminum foil, Calgon or salt can be added.
Toothpaste will also work, apply with an old toothbrush and wipe off with a clean cloth

Yankee magazee says line a 2qt jar with foil, fill with cold water and 2tbsp salt. Add silver, soak 2-3 minutes and remove and rinse. No calgon needed!
