It would take all the pople, like me, who talk a lot of good but dont actually do a lot, to get off their backsides and actually make a difference. People power is the only way.

Before I answer I applaud you for taking the first step towards becoming an active member in world community.
There are so many things that can be done it is hard to help. the most direct thing you can do is join a humanitarian organazation such as the Red cross or UNICEF. these people do what they can to make the world a better place for everybody. If this is too taxing donations to said organizations always go to a worthy cause as they are non-profit organizations. Or you could just find some volunteer aid program on most local bulletins in your area, normally at least someone somewhere has something going on to promote a higher cause.

Sorry, but we'll never get rid of money. But people can use it more consciously. Like buying local or organic for example. I'm surprised you didn't mention global warming Ross. That's more dangerous than losing the ozone b/c of rising oceans and changing weather. Maybe if they had recycle cans next to the trash in big cities, it would help. And if only people who actually needed SUV's drove them (like most people are gonna drive off road), there wouldn't be so much excessive CO2.
Most importantly, people need to educate themselves about the world's problems. That's the crucial first step. Because how can you solve a problem if you can't acknowledge it?

It's a long uphill struggle but if one person stands up to try to tackle the problems that exist locally, then all is not lost.
I work with local communities, some of which are the most deprived in the UK, and have help local residents set up groups to combat racial hatred, crime, anti-social behaviour as well as groups for young children to keep them off the streets and help them to integrate.
My wife and I work together and she will talk to anybody and I talk to everybody. You can start small by tackling local councils if you and your neighbours think things should be different. Complain to the point of nagging if you have to.
If we all did a small amount, we may change the whole world, eventually.

there are a lot of things you can do. Paying attention to the world on the one hand and your community on the other and staying active in government like doing your civic duty by investigating what politicians stand for and do and then voting for them. If you have money you can donate it to a huge number of organizations that help build schools and do other good and important things in peripheral countries. If you don't have money but you have a skill there are agencies that will help you put them to use in peripheral countries. It all depends on your level of committment and involvement and what you want to help with. Realistically we can only do so much as individuals but it really helps when you add it all up.

I think that more powerful than politicians are corporations and big business. Unfortunately, the power of money speaks more than the power of compassion, empathy and doing good. Therefore, we should remember that we are consumers as well as human beings and the way to make a difference is with the wallet as well as with actions. Eg, Barclays Bank was forced to leave South Africa when apartheid was in full swing because of protests and people not banking with them. Other institutions were there, too, but Barclays became the face of it.
Bad publicity can force share prices to drop millions of pounds/dollars overnight; but businesses are consumer-led, eg the latest gadgets meaning more production and fairly good products (eg mobile phones, cameras, i-pods) being discarded for an improved version. We have to stop being a consumerist, materialistic society. Then there are things like farm and textile subsidies which encourage over-production in developed nations, leading to butter mountains and wine lakes in Europe, and a drop in prices and collapsed markets in developing societies, therefore causing poverty. Buying fairtrade is a start - Nescafe and Kraft have launched their own versions - not because they care but because we are buying more fairly traded products.
If we all as individuals did one thing, imagine the collective power and strength we would hold!

Two problems:
Greed & Intolerence. If we all thought about others a little more and thought about how our actions effect others and the environment... we'd be on to something surely?
I see all these posts slagging Muslims... okay now the terrorists are muslims... cool... I hate THOSE muslims, they're not just Muslims though! They're also men, they might also be Man Utd fans! There are loads of asian&white muslims who are as sound as a pound and are probably feeling pretty scared of their own kind and the braying crowd at the mo.
Ahhh I give in!!

Right - I am a veteran drinker ok and I know what I'm talking about when I say - have a couple of poached eggs on toast or perhaps a fried egg sandwich. Don't ask me why this seems to sort out a fragile brain state. Nurofen is the best pill too.

I wish I knew, Ross! I suppose we can all do our little bit by recycling, economising on our use of energy, helping out where we can with voluntary work locally, donating or helping raise funds for good causes. Then there are political means - get involved with politics at local or national level - or lobby your MP.
Where you have an influence (e.g.on your own children, or younger siblings) give a good example. We can but try!
