without a doubt, yes, there are so many uses for the little balls, without them my shirt would be scratchy..my nails would go with polish all the time, and my ears would have gunk in them

no. fire and the wheel rank ahead of it. these are still used today... i cannot remember the last time i saw a cotton ball jammed into a bottle of aspirin.
