Its just another way to greet someone. I personally don't say yo specifically to greet
I sometimes use it inplace if hey.

What's up is ok but I don't know anyone who still says "yo" as a greeting.

um yes...my friends an I alike...we're in our mid 20's...and its not like we think we're cool, or hip or whatever, but its almost just funnier then a boring "hi", or "hey"...you know..."yo, wassup?" and its said with a chuckle, cuase we're a bunch of white suburban kids trying to be ghetto and urban and cool

Depending on who says it... like if it was some serious kind of person who said it it would be funny.
