There are all different types of models. There are parts models who just show off their great hands or feet, there are commercial models who do catalogue work, and there are "editorial" models who do runways and magazines for big-name designers.

To be a model, you have to have a weight in proportion to your height, on the low end of the scale. You need good posture, the ability to walk confidently in super-high-heeled shoes, great skin, good features and no "unattractive" markings on your body. Tattoos and piercings won't help you much. If you're wanting to work on the runways, you'll need to be at least 5'7" tall (and heights that low are the exceptions- most girls are 5'9" and above).

The best way to get started would be to take some basic photos of yourself with no makeup and your hair pulled back off your face. Take the photos against a white wall in natural lighting. Take one whole-body shot (in a bikini), an upper-body shot, a shot of your face smiling and shot of your face with a neutral look. Get these photos printed onto good paper and send them out to different agencies, along with information about your age, height, weight, hair color and eye color. If the agencies are interested, they will contact you. You should NEVER pay money to an agency up front - the agency should be willing to invest in you or else it's a scam.
