It is not completely unheard of that someone, at an relatively early age such as their teens, will choose a life of crime. However, the fact is our nation's prison system is remarkably successful at producing professional criminals. Many people initially get incarcerated due to stupid behavior that really says nothing about who they truly are as people. However, due to their traumatic exposure to the hardships and horrors of the US prison system, as well as their introduction to advanced "criminal techniques" taught to them by the "expert criminals" in prison with them, many a first time inmate will leave prison with a desire to try some of the skills they have learned while inside. Repeated incarcerations tend to only reinforce inmates' criminality, not rehabilitate them.

Any society that seriously wants to address the problem of recidivism will have to tackle three things:
1. Illiteracy and lack of skills: Almost 80% of inmates have inadequate education to the point of functional illiteracy. Since most inmates will be released someday, it would appear wise that they gain reading and other skills as well as practical knowledge applicable towards a legal profession.
2. Substance Abuse: Most prisoners have some form of addiction. If the addiction is not successfully treated in prision, then there is no reason to think that an inmate will not fall back into old patterns of supporting their habit once released.
3. Reintroduction: Many people talk about a person "having served their debt to society, and can now make a fresh start." But, the simple fact is society doesn't forgive or forget: the recently released have a much higher rate of unemployment and homelessness due to covert and overt discrimination on the part of potential employers and etc. Something needs to be done to assist them in gaining access to all the opportunities that we take for granted. Otherwise, there is no way that they can ever redeem themselves and thus reintegrate back into society.

You decide early on to commit crime... Ah but how do you know you're a true professinal, that's the real question

That's when you never get caught...like Politicians, or if you get caught you slither away and somehow Charges like perjury never stick i.e., that slick silver tounged devil, that rascal,
Wild Bill Clinton! A real Pro!

It's easier to be a Liberal Left Wing Democrat and then you're allowed to store up to $90,000.00 in your Freezer at home but... that wasn't very professional, was it?.

No that is silly. My parents have placed a moral system in me however my birthfather is what you might call a career criminal. It calls to me too. It is in your blood. Crime is what you crave, breaking the law is something that it almost feels like I have to do.

They simply decide to be evil. After a certain point, it seems there is no turning back... they keep at it till they die or get caught.
