Could someone help me I'm looking for a decent but inexpensive car alarm but don't know the first thing about car alarms? Any & all help is most appreciated!

I know it is poor form to answer a question with a question, but, though I have heard many, has any actually gone off when a THEFT was being attempted? Seems like there are always false alarms.

Car alarms,
I do know some things, but the reality is what do you want in an alarm you can have everything from starter diable which make the starter not work if the alarm is on.
then there is a pager that you can get with it. let's see...
The list goes on.
for a starter package I would go for one that is a brand name. from a retailer like Best buy or go by your local car stereo and look at theis pricing. thell the sales guy what you want to prevent. If you want one that just makes noise then they are pretty cheap in two ways they are made cheap and are a dime a dozen. Go educate yourself at the link provided I am biased to the one in the description as I sell them at my auto repair/Stereo install shop.

Rule number one---You usually get what you pay for.

That stated, you can get a fairly decent alarm for about $30.00 to $60.00 that will do everything (Alarm, Ignition dis-able, remote lock/unlock, etc.)
Most all of the kits come with very clear installation instructions.
