I have been getting some strange e-mails that contain the line purgemenow.com which I do not seem to be able to rid myself of. Is there any way I can stop them downloading

If they come from the same address just mark them as spam and don't open them.
If they come from random addresses, just don't open any from unknown sources.
Its best to have at least 2 e-mail addresses. The one you get from your i.s.p. should be treated like an ex-directory phone number, very private.
You have a second one for friends and family.
You can have a third one if you want to publish your address on the web. When they start to attract spam, just dump them and set up new ones.

Try hitting the spam button (or the equivalent button on your email server). This will usually take care of the problem. If it doesn't simply delete without opening it.
