Nystatin is not very effective for thrush. Many strains are resistant to it today. Unfortunately, the fact that you used it *and* that you didn't effectively treat the thrush quickly may make it even harder to treat now. I would suggest you read a great La Leche League article that may help (see first reference in sources section below), as well as a collection of articles by a pediatrician who is a breastfeeding expert (see second link below). The only comment I want to add to the second one is that the "all-purpose nipple ointment" is almost always overkill--it's intended to be used when you have no idea what the problem is and want to try everything all at once.

In addition to prescription or over-the-counter antifungals, there are some other things that can help. First of all, eat natural yogurt (unsweetened) with *live* cultures. Sterilize daily everything that comes in contact with your breasts and/or baby's mouth, and replace weekly until you are completely over thrush. Some families find that it is necessary to change toothbrushes once or twice, as well.

And *whatever* you do, do *not* use neosporin. It is an antibiotic. It can't help; it can only make things worse. By killing bacteria, the growth of yeast will *increase* because there will be less competition!! OUCH!!

The links below should be really helpful to you in treating your thrush. Do make sure that you continue to treat BOTH of you.

You might want to wash all your bras in HOT water with bleach and dry on hot in the dryer or in the sun.

Add acidophilus supplements (40 million units per day) to your diet. Eat yogurt with live cultures.

Rinsing your nipples with a vinegar and water solution (1 tablespoon vinegar to 1 cup water) after every feeding is helpful. Use a fresh cotton ball for each application and mix a new solution every day.

Some women find that reducing yeast and sugar in their diet helps.

Be very careful about washing your hands, especially after diaper changes.

EDITED TO ADD:
DO NOT do the cabbage leaves as suggested below. Cabbage leaves are for treating ENGORGEMENT and not thrush. And putting something WET in your bra if you have thrush will only help the thrush to thrive!

I just got over this myself.

Use gentian violet 2 times a day for 3 days. It makes a mess, but paint any part of you areola and nipple that are pink with it and inside the babies mouth and tongue. It will be purple for a day or 2 but it is worth it for the releif.

OR you can get Lotrimin cream from walmart. It is the athletes foot cream. It is to treat fungus and that is exactly what thrush is. This is what actually got rid of it on me.

My daughter ended up having to have a prescription of Diflucan. IT was gone from her the next day after using it.

I had the same thing twice (once with each of my sons) and we tried everything. I was finally given a prescription for Diflucon. Since thrush is a yeast infection, this one little pill took care of it. It's possible that mulitple treatments may be needed, but it's worth it. You could also use Monostat. Just remember to wash it all off before nursing.

Good luck!

Yes, try miconazole 2% gel 2.5 mls 3 times day after feeding for baby's mouth and clotrimazole 1% for your nipples. Use for at least 2 days after symptoms clear in both parties.

daktarin cream is good and you need to change your bra everyday and wash bras and towels at very hight temperatures. also use shields cups in your bra or very absorbant breast pads and change regular, to keep nipples dry. thrush breeds on dark moist areas. you need to be consistent and keep applying the cream and oral gel for baby. do not share towels and wash baby towels after use. also maybe look into you diet have you got too much sugar and starch in your diet that can also contribute. good luck

you really need to see your gp again and have a consultantion. also see if your health visitor can be there too , if your all there and put your heads together you will surely come up with the reasons for why this painful infection re-occurs.
you have stated that you and baby get antibiotics, so it should clear up. are the medications being used for long enough. or are they not strong enough...consult doctor and see what they suggest...but please please dont give up breastfeeding...its the best possible start of which iam sure you are aware. and well done for continuing even though you have this horrid pain constantly...good luck in a cure...
p.s. yogurt kills these germs ....mmmmm.. you decide...!!!!!.

try mothercare nipple cream. i used it and it worked great. it may be an idea to stop breatfeeding for a few days and express instead because it may just be being passed between you both constantly until completely clears up.
if in doubt ring your midwife or see your dr because it may lead to more serious problems

You need to see your doctor. I had the same thing and once I started my antibiotics, I got MUCH better. All was well in about 3 days.
